Pershing chose Belton as his headquarters for the Western District of Missouri. After World War II, Belton became a center for agriculture and manufacturing. Belton is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It is located on the east side of theMissouri River, about 20 miles northeast of St. Louis and 30 miles southwest of Kansas City. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. Belton began as an Indian village on the confluence of Belton Creek and Pouch Creek in 1812. The first white settler arrived in 1834, and by 1840 Belton had a post office, school, and Methodist church. In 1854, a railroad was built through Belton to connect St. Louis with Kansas City; this increased traffic and led to business development around the depot and town center. In 1870, a courthouse was built; it served until 1939 when a new courthouse was built in nearby Florissant Heights. In 1902, John Waddell started what became General Mills Packers Inc., one of America's leading agricultural companies. Waddell moved his company headquarters from Chicago to Belton after buying land there in 1901 for $3 million dollars (the equivalent of $105 million today). He named his company after his home state of Illinois—Belton being one word off its initial list—and soon added other major agricultural companies to his portfolio: Pioneer Foods (1905), Swift-Benton Lumber Company (1906), Great Western Paper & Fibers (1910), Northern Pacific Railroad Co.'s subsidiary Union Pacific Railway Co.'s line between Decatur Junction northwest of Stilwell Junction westward from Decatur Junction into Hannibal County northward to White Sulphur Springs Casino where wagons carrying flour were unloaded on Sundays for delivery into Hannibal County Sunday marketplaces across central Missouri Monday morning before continuing onward Tuesday evening deliveries into Springfield Saturday night markets across eastern Missouri Friday night deliveries). Belton's founding in 1837 as a small log cabin on the edge of an open field near what would become downtown Belton today. By 1860, when the railroad arrived in this part of Missouri, much of the present-day city had been built around Mr. BelTON's old home and mill complex on North Main Street between First and Second streets eastward from Union Station - now known as Northern Illinois University’s “Old Campus”[2]. In 1868 James P.'s son John W., Jr., came west with his father to take over management of the mill; within two years he had built a larger building on current Fourth Street opposite Union Station that still stands today as headquarters for Hancock Insurance Company[3], one of three original insurance companies operating in Missouri during that early period[4]. The following year another son, Harry D., joined them operations; by 1886 all six brothers were running their businesses together as J & S Oil Co.; also that year important additions to the town included a post office (established 1865), courthouse (1870), schoolhouse (1871), Baptist church (1872), Masonic Lodge No 2 [5], and first store on Fourth Street [6]; just before prohibition made drinking alcohol illegal in Kansas City it was reported that “the Good People’ve got A bottle o hooch apiece waitin’ for us outside havin’ some fun while we drink our sherry inside” – business opportunities were scarce until prohibition repealed across America The early 20th century saw great changes for both men who lived here: John W Blair became manager/presidential candidate for United States Senate from Missouri in 1932; Rufus E・Jones replaced him in 1934 after Jones won election against incumbent Orville Hamer In 1935 local physician Dr Freudenthal opened Freudenthal Medical Center on Sixth Street SE corner Market street between Third and Fourth Streets; this became one of several medical institutions serving residents here during World War II In 1957 Reva Lantz became first female pastor at First Baptist Church—now Southern Illinois University Carbondale; her husband–Reva served from 1978-2002 Mrs Lantz retired effective June 15th 2002 after being with SIU Carbondale since 1968 Mrs Lantz will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery throughout her life there are multiple services each month including an evening service starting at 6 pm

In 1904, the first school building on the site was built; it served as a community center until 1959 when construction began on a new school building that has since been completed. The old school building remains standing to this day and is used as a museum.
