The town center grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military installations such as Fort Riley and Fort Chaffin (now part of Kansas City). Most notably, Belton became home to Stryker's Jeep plant during World War II; this plant manufactured jeeps for veteran drivers all over America. The town experienced rapid growth again following the end of World War II when development resumed along two new axes: medical care and education. In 1965, BelTON became one of only two towns in Johnson County (the other being Topeka) to receive city status; this designation made it easier for residents to get services from city hall instead of having to go through individual departments like Streetscape or Parks & Recreation. A new high school opened here in 2001 and has since become one of the most popular schools in Johnson County – attendance has Increased by more than 30% annually!
