Belton, MO is one of the oldest communities in Missouri. It was founded in 1831 by Captain James Wilkinson and his family. The first store in Belton was called the Wilkinson House and it was built on the present site of the Belton High School. In 1848, Captain Wilkinson's son, George Wilkinson, started a blacksmith shop in Belton. The shop became known as the George Wilkinson Shop and it remains a prominent part of town today. In 1861, Colonel Isaac Newton established an arsenal at Belton to provide munitions for the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The arsenal remained active until 1865 when it was closed due to lack of funding. In 1925, a new armory was built at Belton and named after General John J. Pershing which became operational in 1927. Today, Belton's armory is home to various local businesses including several stores that offer ammo products such as firearms ammunition, reloading supplies, or hunting supplies.
