With its new statehood came increased development for Bellefontaine; in 1871, it had three churches (oneMethodist, one Presbyterian, and one Catholic), an opera house (later converted to a movie theater), two schools (one high school and one junior high/secondary school), four stores, two insurance companies, two telephone companies, six agricultural businesses (six acres of corn fields each), five families who ranched land west of town along contemporary I-435; twenty-four people lived there alone in 1870; seventy-eight people lived there by 1900; ninety-five percent were engaged in agriculture or commerce: seventy-three farmers(of whom thirty-two were tenant farmers who rented land from larger landowners); twelve mechanics shops; eight blacksmiths shop; four druggists; three bakeries; one hotel - all built before 1880 Bellefontaine quickly became an important stopping place for travelers on I-435 between Florissant and Kansas City. Tourists stopped at local farms to buy eggs or flour while they continued their journey southward through Missouri until reaching Illinois or Iowa Territory near Fort Kearny on the Iowa side of the Mississippi River where they could continue their journey back home via Rock Island Railroad or Buffalo Bayou crossings over to Texas or Mexico City before finally arriving at their final destination - Saint Louis metropolitan area!
