The first schools were established in Bellefontaine in 1836 by Methodist ministers led by Revs Aaron Ives and James Guthrie (the latter also served as school superintendent). Both public schools were operated side-by-side with private academies until their closure during Reconstruction; then they were combined into one school system under Superintendent Jno Leland Kinghart until its closure during World War II due to cost overruns. Class sizes grew larger as students added siblings or parents unable to work outside the home; consequently there never was enough space for all children within the original village boundaries that constituted “Bellefontain” before 1860 when one family moved away for religious reasons (Hawksworth).
