Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Bellefontaine was platted in 1857 and named for Bellefontaine Abbey in Normandy, France. The town was founded on a farmstead by Docteur John A. Bellefontaine and his wife Anna Hinchcliffe Bellefontaine. In 1881, the Bellefontaines sold their holdings to the Town of BelleFontaine Corporation which became the governing body of the town through an ordinance passed in 1903. The first post office in Bellefontaine was established on December 12, 1857, and served until it closed on July 15, 1865. It reopened on October 6 with mail from Jefferson City under the name "Belleville." The first store opened at 7 South Main Street in 1861; this store continued to be open until 1923 when it closed due to lack of business activity. The city developed around its railroad station which served as an important link between Belleville and other communities in Missouri. The Bellefontaine Railroad also contributed to the growth of the city. The station played an important role in keeping Belleville connected with other parts of Missouri and Illinois. Bellefontaine Neighbors experienced many cultural changes during its history. In 1870, it became the home to one of the first American universities when University of Chicago moved from Illinois to Belleville. A number of businesses and industries emerged during Bellefontaine’s rapid growth including marble quarries (which supplied stone for churches and public buildings), a printing press, lumberyards, breweries and meatpacking plants. These businesses helped make Belleville one of the most influential cities on the continent during its early years as a capital city. However, even though Belleville enjoyed prosperity throughout its history, it faced major problems such as racism which affected both black and white residents alike; corruption; periodic flooding that destroyed valuable property; business closures due to economic problems;and street level crime which led to high levels of social violence among residents). However, these issues were eventually overcome through community engagement and activism over time- something that can be seen throughout Bellefontaine’s continuing story today despite some challenges (e.g., dwindling population).
