Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine is named for General Lafayette and his sister Rachel who moved to the area from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1812. Bellefontaine was founded by John and Sarah Beavers in 1868 when they bought land from the Hennepin County Commissioners for $1 per acre. They built a log cabin on their farm which served as their home until 1959. In that year, Walter Pembroke donated two shotguns to Bellefontaine Township trustees which were used to shoot county fair games until 1966 when they were replaced by handguns. From then on, all township events were held with handguns only until 1978 when shotguns were again allowed at events after a public outcry led to prohibition of handguns in state law nationwide that year. The first post office in Bellefontaine was established in 1871; it declined due to high postal rates required by Congress for postage stamps and also because of lack of subscribers among the early settlers who had no need for such an expensive service In 1895, Bellefontaine became known as "the most isolated community on the Great Western Railroad" due to its distance from any other settlements within fifty miles of Springfield or Hannibal In 1916, James Ewing organized what would become known as "The Knights of Columbus" along with nine other men from nearby Manchester into what became known as The United Order Of New Zion Bellefontaine remained unincorporated through 1930 but changed its name back to Bellefontain Township after becoming an official village in that year In 1945, following World War II silver shortages caused by the war's aftermath which deepened following Germany's annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia resulted in increased demand for Belgian coins throughout Europe; this led to an increase demand for silver bullion among American investors throughout 1945 and 1946 especially given how valuable Belgians were considered during inflationary times given their low wages postwar compared with U.S.$ value at that time A local man named Raymond Wehner started producing aluminum cans using recycled coal mine slag while employed by Joplin-based Noyes Metal Products Company effective January 1st 1951 Belleville experienced rapid growth during the late 1950s with numerous new businesses opened including a grocery store (1956), dry cleaners (1958), restaurant (1959), medical center (1963), paper mache cupcake factory (1964) and many more over ensuing years culminating in population growth above 3 percent each decade through 2000 despite steady declines since then

However, during World War II the city became known for its production of aluminum cans because of their proximity to Joplin Arsenal. In the early 1960s BellefontaineNeighbors lost much of its agricultural production due to changes in farming methods and technology. However, since then it has regained some of its former economic importance through businesses such as real estate agents and farmers markets.
