BellefontaineNeighbors is located on the east side of I-435, about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown St. Louis and about 8 miles (13 km) south of Bellefontaine Junction, where I-435 and US 64 intersect. Bellefontaine Neighbors was laid out in 1836 and named for Colonel John Bellefontaine, who had purchased land in what is now Bellefontaine Township from Captain Daniel Boone in 1827. The first settlers were farmers who raised corn and beans on their farmsteads until they built a log cabin near present day Maplewood Road in 1840. In 1845, General James Hays organized the First Missourian Militia to suppress slavery in Missouri and he offered his home to the first white settler to be born in Bellefontaine Township – John Tremont – as an official unincorporated village site. In 1870, when Congress extended voting rights to African Americans through the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Belle Fontainians supported passage of that law by referendum; however, some residents boycotted church services because they objected to racial integration. After years of peaceful protests by African American families living nearby without incident, police raided one such home on November 3rd, 1968 after complaints from local white residents about possible voter irregularities; during that raid 5 people were arrested including three teenagerscolored men ages 17-21 – precipitating what became known as "TheNight Of The Long Knives". No indictments were ever filed against any officers involved but public sentiment shifted against black civil rights activists throughout much of this era due to fear that more similar incidents would occur if law enforcement did not take action effectively; following The Night Of The Long Knives several thousand black political organizer volunteers marched through town demanding equal treatment under the law at a series of events dubbed "TheDay Of Action". This led eventually to formation of the National Black Political Union which successfully challenged voter intimidation laws across all 50 states during the 1970s and 1980s before disbanding around 1990 due to lack of funding

The first settler in Bellefontaine Neighbors was J.D. Williamson and his family who arrived in 1853. In 1865, Thaddeus Stevens founded the Platte River Valley Railroad near Bellefontaine to help transport goods from town to the larger city. In 1870, one of Bellefontaine’s most famous residents—John Brown—made his home here after moving from Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. The community had begun as a small farming village with close to 100 residents when it became known as Bellefontaineville during World War I because of its strategic location on three railroads that linked the war zone with larger markets outside of Kansas City. After the war ended and post-war growth resumed, Bellefontaineville saw rapid growth thanks to new housing developments by developers like Harry Blackmon and Edward Hays (the two men who were responsible for developing much of downtownKansas City). By 1930, Belmontayne Neighbors boasted over 1,000 residents and consisted entirely of single-story frame dwellings built along Indian Creek Road between Truman Boulevard and Karnes Avenue east of Union Pacific Railroad tracks at what is now Girard Avenue NE. Although growth slowed slightly following World War II due to high demand for housing in downtownKansas City postwar suburbs quickly emerged around town – including Bellevue Heights (to the north), Prairie Village (to the west), Garden Grove (southwest), Maplewood ( northwest) – by 1960BellemontayneNeighbors had shrunk back to just over 200 people as newer subdivisions such as Preble Park were established nearby In 2000BelleFontaineNeighbors again saw rapid growth when Lawrence Steiner Developments built two high-rise apartment buildings at 401E Independence Street called “The Tower” and “The Star” which commands a impressive view of Independence Mall from their balconies across The LoopWalk area adjacent to Keystone Light Rail Station
