Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri is a small town located in the county of Bollinger in eastern Missouri. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. BellefontaineNeighbors has a long and colorful history dating back to its founding as a small village on the banks of the Kishwaukee River. In 1819, General James Wilkinson founded Bellefontaine Village on land he had purchased from the Winnebago people. The name "Bellefontaine" was derived from two sources: one was an old French word meaning "beautiful face," and the other referred to a beautiful stream that flowed through Bellefontaine Village. The first post office in Bellefontaine Village was established in 1825, and it continued to serve until 1840. From 1830-1835, John Davenport served as postmaster for Bellefontaine Village. During this time, he also operated a gristmill and store in the village. In 1836-1839, Samuel Hodge served as postmaster for Bellefontain Village; his tenure lasted six years. A school was established in BellefontaineVillage in 1837 by Elijah Funkenstein and others; it continued to operate until 1845. A Methodist church also opened in 1840; it functioned until 1850 when it burned down due to fire caused by lightning。 In 1861-1862, James Wessels served as postmaster for BellemontainVillage; his term lasted four years In 1865-1866 Jno Pfeffer served as Postmaster for BellemontaineVillage; his term lasted three years In 1870-1871 Danforth Cardwell served as Post Master for BellefontayneVillage; his term last four years A Grist Mill & Store were built around 1840 by Samuel Hodge (Samuel Howden). This mill started operation with power coming from some trees near where current day Main Street meets 2nd Avenue bridge across Kishwaukee River

Bellefontaine Neighbors, located in the township of Bellefontaine, was one of the earliest communities in the county. The first settler, John Bellefontaine, arrived in 1811 and built a log cabin on what is now U.S. Route 66 and State Highway 154. By 1817, Bellefontaine had a tavern and two stores. In 1824, John Bellefontaine's grandson, Daniel Bellefontaine, opened a general store which soon became known as the "Grand Ole Opry Store." DanielBellefontaine died in 1832 and his son-in-law Jesse James opened the store again after he inherited it from his father-in-law. By 1840, there were six businesses operating in town - three general stores (Daniel Belle Fontaines & Jesse James), one grocery (John Sisson), and one blacksmith shop (George Stephenson). In 1846, when Belleville Township was organized into counties within Missouri , Bellefontaine was included within that new county . The first courthouse in Belleville Township was built at this time and served as the judicial center for all of eastern Platte County . When Belleville Township disbanded in 1896 due to reorganization within Missouri , its land became part of new Rossville Township . The town continued to grow during the 19th century but slowed down during World War I because so many residents left for military service. During World War II , many residents moved back into town once it was liberated from Nazi occupation . After the war ended, most people returned to their normal lives until they were hit by another economic recession that began throughout 2007–2008. At this time much of downtown business stopped because few jobs could be found outside of town proper. A group led by Mayor Jeff Hirschband resurrected some downtown businesses with investment from outside investors while attempting to find alternative ways to bring more people back into town via summertimejobs opportunities
