Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri has been a part of the United States since 1821. The city was founded by Captain John P. Hickey and his family on the banks of the Belle River. The first settlers in Bellefontaine were Methodists from Kentucky who built their first log cabin in 1826. A store and post office were established in 1828, and a community hall was built in 1830. In 1839, the town became a county seat, and a jail was built. A water tower was completed in 1840, and a school was opened in 1845. In 1865, Bellefontaine became an incorporated town with a population of 1,000 people. The first annexation of another township took place in 1889 when Bellefontaine annexed Belleville Township. A fire destroyed most of the businesses in 1880, but new businesses began to operate shortly thereafter including two breweries and three lumberyards. Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri is a small town in east-central Missouri. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hannibal-St. Joseph Micropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was platted in 1856 by David Bellefontaine and his wife Nancy Bellefontaine. The name comes from two sisters who were born in the same year, Belle and Bountiful (Fenton). In 1857, David Bellefontaine married Susannah Lyon and they began to operate a farm on what is now Main Street in Bellefontaine. They also built a log cabin on this property which still stands today. In 1860, the family moved to what is now Union Station Road in central Bellefontaine and started to grow crops and raise livestock there. By 1865, they had acquired additional land including present day Dutch Lane which runs through their community today. In 1870, the couple added another log cabin to their property, this time called New Home Place. This addition became home to many of their descendants until it was destroyed by a fire in 1984. It wasn't until 1886 that David Bellefontaine purchased some adjoining land for what would become known as Old Home Place Township . He used it as his farmstead until his death in 1935 . After his death, Old Home Place Township passed into private hands with several residents moving onto new properties within the township boundaries – most notably those located along Dutch Lane where much of the current community developed around 1955 when that section of Dutch Lane was annexed into Belleville Township
Bellefontaine Neighbors was a small town in St. Joseph County, Missouri, United States before the American Civil War. It was located on the east side of Bellefontaine Creek, about two miles north of its confluence with the Kansas River. The town had a population of 375 in 1860 and declined rapidly during the war to just 54 residents by 1870. By 1875, it had disappeared completely from Missouri census records.
