Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. BellefontaineNeighbors had its beginnings in 1854 as a group of farmers who decided to move from nearby Alton and move into what would become Bellefontaine Neighbors. The name "Bellefontaine" came from a stream that ran through their property. They named their first home "The Farm". In 1865, four men from Bellefontaine moved to Dixon and started a grocery store there. In 1868, another group of farmers moved to Bellefontaine Neighbors and started an agricultural business called the Hensley Bros'. Store on Main Street. In 1897, the Bellefontaine Methodist Church was built and it continued to be used until it burned down in 1978. This early community had two schools: one for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and one for seventh through eleventh grades (the current high school opened in 1961). There was also a church with services every Sunday morning until 1954 when it became affiliated with St. Louis University School of Medicine & Dentistry instead of continuing as an independent church institution like it had been before. When Bellefontaine Neighbor's post office opened on July 1st 1863, residents were able to send mail by wagon upriver to Alton using wagons pulled by horses pulling heavy logs filled with hay which was delivered back downriver on flatboats manned by employees of local farms watermelons, eggs etc.). A second post office operated from 1864-1870; however this later closed due to lack of mail traffic or due to political choices made by then Postmaster General John Pemberton refusing to allow free postage for letters sent from slave states (at that time Missouri included). A third post office operated from 1870-1878 but this also failed because many people only received paper stamps which didn’t work well with electronic mail technology at that time! From 1898-1901 there was only an electric mailbox service available so residents could send messages without having to go outside! In 1903, BellefontaineNeighbors incorporated as a town under the name "Ozark Heights". When neighboring towns began annexing into larger municipalities during the late 1800s/early 1900s, BelleFontain Neighbors refused annexation because they wanted more control over their own affairs – something that other smaller communities eventually succumbed too (e example Monroe Heights annexed into Jefferson City while Galt Annexed into Uniontown). As such, after much debate between both sides Corsair bleached white paint over all 4 doors/windows on Main Street in 1906("Corsair Bleached White Paint Over All Doors And Windows On Main Street In 2006 To Mark Our Town's Independence") just in case any future larger municipalities came knocking for annexation since Corsair already owned most of our land! However incorporation did not result in increased power or self-government within our town – much like today's situation where many smaller towns have similar boundaries but don't have same level Of autonomy) . Today's community has experienced various changes throughout its history including growth spurts following World War II followed by steady decline beginning around 1970 due to socioeconomic factors including opulence resulting from oil exploration along I-55 near Kossuth Lake making rural life difficult while businesses grew involved selling everything FROM BAKERY PRODUCTS TO AUTO TRANSPORTATION TO LAND DEVELOPMENT AND MUCH MORE……….
