Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri was a small town in central Missouri at the time of the American Civil War. The town was located on the border of volatile Union and Confederate territory. In 1861, Bellefontaine Neighbors was one of several dozen towns in central Missouri that refused to secede from the Union. In 1862, when General Robert E. Lee invaded Missouri, Bellefontaine Neighbors sided with the Confederacy and garrisoned its own fortifications. The fortifications were abandoned in 1865 after Confederate efforts to capture nearby Kansas City failed. The history of Bellefontaine Neighbor's guns is intertwined with the history of its residents. On May 1st, 1831, the first school was opened in Bellefontaine. It was called the “Methodist School” and is still open today. The first store in Bellefontaine was opened by J.W. Goff on July 8th, 1835. The business name of the store changed to the “Goff Store” after Mr. Goff’s death.

Bellefontaine is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Bellefontaine is located at (39.568627, -92.545362). It has a total area of , all of it land. The first settler in Bellefontaine was John Fenton who came to the area in 1836. Other early residents included Daniel Boone and his brother James who settled around 1840 on a farm that still stands today adjacent to Bellefontaine Road south of town limits. The community site was donated by Mrs. Boone to the town in 1888 after her husband's death from yellow fever while on Expedition No. 4 west of Bellefontanee Creek near current day Hampden Hospital junction (Upper Street and Patton Avenue).
