In 1871, Bellefontaine Neighbors incorporated as a town under the name Bellefontain Township due to its proximity to other towns in the area such as Maplewood and Florissant. In 1897, it changed its name to Bellefontaine Village after becoming part of St Joseph Parish within Jefferson County. In 1928, it again changed its name to Bellefontaine Neighborhood because that is what the area had become known as thanks to annexation by nearby Maplewood later that year. The population of Bellefontaine Neighborhood peaked at 1,500 in 1939 but declined during World War II due to military activity along I-44 near thecommunity center and elsewhere in St Joseph Parish."
