The first gun in BellefontaineNeighbors was a flintlock revolver that was used by residents to shoot game during the early 1800s. In 1892, Bellefontaine Neighbors had its first city-sponsored shooting contest which attracted over 100 participants from throughout the area. From this event, Bellefontaine Neighbors became known as "The Gunnery Capital of the World." Bellefontaine Neighbors was a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. BellefontaineNeighbors was platted in 1857 by physician and politician John Bellefontaine and his wife Lizzie Fontanne. The name comes from a stream called Bellefonte which flowed through their farmstead. They named it for their home place near Belleville in France, where they had been born and brought up. The Bellefontaines were pioneer settlers in what is now Jackson County and built the first house there in 1857. John Bellefontaine died in 1865 but Lizzie continued to live there until her death in 1901. She was buried at Rosemount Cemetery. John Bellefontaine's son-in-law George Weimer bought the farmstead from Lizzie Fontanne’s estate in 1909 and changed the name to Bellefontaine Neighbors Incorporated Company Limited Partnership of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on October 15, 1912 with Alder McFarlane as President/CEO (the predecessor company name). In 1916 Mr Weimer sold it to Edward Jurgenson who changed its name again to Bellefontaines Neighborhoods Corporation of America on May 10, 1919 with Banfield Cramer as President/CEO (the successor company name). On July 9th 1950 Cecil Bendix became president of both companies when they merged into American National Corporation under that name which still exists today as one of America's leading real estate development firms! In 1954 Edward Jurgenson passed away leaving his two daughters Noelene (wife of Lee Atwater) and Judith Barlowe ran Belfleount Neighbors Corp until 1966 when they sold it back to Noelene Barlowe who then transferred it back into hands of her father while she lived out her life there - finally ending up beingqueued into succession control through female descendants via intestacy!
