Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Bellefontaine is located on the border of Bellefontaine and Forest Park Township. Bellefontaine was founded by European colonists in 1831 as an agricultural community named after the Belle Fontaine waterfall near present-day Forest Park Township. The name came from two sources: one said "Belle" was a beautiful waterfall near Bellefontaine and the other blamed a local Indian chief for stealing food from settlers in that area, so they called their new settlement "Fontain." In 1836, when Fontain's post office opened, residents adopted the name Bellefontaine to honor their new community and its namesake. In 1853, John A. White settled in nearby Forest Park Township and started developing what would become Bellefontaine into a small town with his own sawmill and gristmill; he named it after himself and his wife (the name for Fontain had already been taken). That same year, General Scott's army destroyed most of Mississippi's plantations in Prairie du Lac County during its Invasion of Missouri campaign; much of what remains of those plantations now forms part of Bellefontain's downtown core along Second Street between Market Place and First Avenue SW Bellefontaneers were among the first people to arrive in St. Louis following American independence on July 4th, 1800; many arrived through burials at Beaumont Cemetery which still contains headstones dating back to that time On November 21st 1861 Griggstownites – who had earlier helped organize resistance against Confederate forces invading Missouri – met at Belfry’s Tavern under cover of darkness to plan an attack upon Fort Donelson Two nights later they succeeded in breaking through Union lines unopposed and inflicting heavy losses on Confederate defenders Afterward Griggstownites gathered reinforcements numbering over 100 men including several flags “and marched boldly up Fourth Street towards Independence Hall where they made their headquarters until ordered by General Donelson not to proceed any further because there was too much opposition” Monumental marker erected today at Fourth & Independence Streets commemorates this event

Bellefontaine Neighbors is a town in Vernon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2000 census. Bellefontaine is located on the east bank of the Florissant River. The first settlers in Bellefontaine were James and Elizabeth Claiborne who arrived in 1836. When they moved to Bellefontaine from Belleville, Illinois, they named their new home "Bellefontaine." Bellefontaine was platted in 1873 by Wm. Hite and A.C. Smith as a village comprising three blocks square with a street leading north to south and two streets leading east and west each meeting at an intersection. In 1886 the name of the village was changed to BelleFontaine Township when it became part of Vernon County. The original white schoolhouse which served as both a public school and community center until it burned down in 1922 remains one of Belle Fontaines most iconic landmarks. It is also home to one of the few remaining examples of a gable roofed house built before 1870s along with many other pioneer-era structures including churches, stores, barns and residences that still stand today within easy walking distance of each other on Main Street between Second Avenue and Fourth Avenue NE
Bellefontaine Neighbors was a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States until the early 21st century. The community was established in 1881 and located just east of Bellefontaine Village on State Route 316. It had a population of about 100 people at its peak in the 1920s. The post office was discontinued in 1961 and the last residents left Bellefontaine Township in 1969.
