Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri is one of the oldest communities in Bellefontaine Township, Ohio. The township was originally named for John Bellefontaine, who donated land to the town. The first self-defense pistol club in the township was formed in 1892. In 1916, a gun show was held at Bellefontaine Park and a rifle show followed two years later. In 1926, the township voted to prohibit handguns and carry permits were required for all residents. In 1930, Bellefontaine Township became an unincorporated community and no longer has any ordinances or regulations from its previous government. The firearm industry began expanding in Bellefontaine Township in the early 1900s with many local factories manufacturing firearms such as shotguns, rifles and pistols. Many of these companies have since closed or are no longer active. Bellefontaine was founded in 1853 by white pioneers from Kentucky and Indiana who named it for Bellefleur (a small French village near Rochefort on the Loire), their native village just east of what is now Bellefontaine Neighborhoods. A post office was established at Bellefontaine in 1854, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1902, an American Legion post camp was built here; it served as a garrison for Ulysses S. Grant's General Patton's army during World War II and as a base for Union military operations against Confederate forces during that war. The town declined after World War II but regained its popularity in the 1990s when it became home to two large shopping malls – one across I-70 from downtown Kansas City and the other on nearby Westport Road – and a number of high-end restaurants and bars including Zinfandel wine cellars & steak houses, Steak 'n Shake, Hardees Brothers BBQ & Grills, D'Angelo's Italian Restaurant & Pizza Place., Pabst Blue Ribbon beer gardens & more. At one point there were even plans to build a mall called "The Village" located adjacent to Westport Road; however these became unsuccessful due to lack of support from local politicians and developers. In recent years there has been an effort to revive Bellefontaine with investments such as new housing developments around I-70 as well as some renovation projects such as redoing streetscape and adding new sidewalks along Westport Road which are popular with residents dog walkers looking for exercise without having to go outside!
Bellefontaine Neighbors was a small town in southern Missouri, located on the banks of the Ottawa River. It was established in 1827 by General David Belknap and his wife, Rachel. The first post office was established in Bellefontaine on December 1, 1827. The population of Bellefontaine decreased from around 200 to only 10 by 1830 due to Indian removal. However, there continued to be some growth within the community as new families were brought in from neighboring towns. In 1850, the community had a total population of 50 and by 1860 it had increased to 100. By 1870, Bellefontain Neighbor's population had decreased again to 60 due to increasing immigration rates from Illinois and other states. However, starting in 1874-1875 there was an increase in the number of residents due to the construction of a railroad line through Bellefontaine which made it easier for residents to connect with surrounding communities.
