The population was 514 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine Neighbors was named for Belle Fontaine, a Frenchwoman who came to America in 1785. The first post office was established in 1812. In 1825, the town had six stores and fifty residents. By 1830, it had twenty-eight stores and five hundred residents. By 1840, it had thirty-four stores and one thousand residents. In 1860, Bellefontaine Neighbors had twelve residences and three churches. The last post office closed in 1975; however, the name still remains on a building in Wentzville that is used as an information center for local schools
