The town was originally settled by Germans in the early 1800s and became an incorporated city in 1905. Bellefontaine Neighbors had its peak during World War II as it was one of the most heavily bombed areas in the United States. The town experienced a resurgence after the war, but has currently lost much of its population due to various factors such as migration and economic decline. Bellefontaine Neighbors was founded on October 10, 1867 when German settlers arrived in what is now Bellefontaine Neighborhoods. At first, the settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat and other crops near their homes. Over time, however, BellefontaineNeighbors became known for its shotguns which are some of the earliest examples of firearms ever developed in America. The first shotgun manufactured in BellefontaineNeighbors was called the “Dutch Boy” and it was designed by George Stephenson. It consisted of a stock made from wood with aachable shotgun shells hidden inside. The “Dutch Boy” quickly became popular among local civilian shooters and saw continual use into the 1930s when shotguns started becoming more common than pistols. In 1937, one of BellefontainNeighbor's own farmers patented his design for a shotgun that he named the “BB-gun” or Big Ben Gun. This shotgun featured an 8-inch barrel that could be used either with live rounds or birdshot ammunition. It remained popular into the 1940s when handguns began becoming more common and eventually replaced shotguns as America's primary firearm choice

The first gun owner in Bellefontaine Neighbors was Isaac Bellefontaine who purchased a rifle from Capt. John Aiken in 1819. In 1837, David Green bought a shotgun from Elisha Gibbs and he also built the firstsmith shop in BellefontaineNeighbors which still stands today. In 1868, Wm Fenton purchased a revolver from Amos Hutton and his son Charles Fenton became the first justice of the peace in Bellefontaine Neighbors.
Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small, rural town in far southeastern Missouri. It was founded in 1837 by John Bellefontaine and his wife Anna. The Bellefontaines were pioneer farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables on their farmsteads near the confluence of the Little Blue River and the Kanawha River. They also raised horses and cattle. BellefontaineNeighbors has a population of about 1,000 people today. The town is located about 20 miles east of St Louis on I-270. Highway 9A runs through the heart of Bellefontaine Neighbors; it connects the town with neighboring communities including Alma, Mount Pleasant, and Parkville. Bellefontaine Neighbors is named after John Bellefontaine's father-in-law, Salmon Prentice (1786-1854), who also came to BelleFontaine in 1837. Salmon had married Anna (née Hager) from nearby Mount Pleasant Township. In 1838, Anna established a store at what is now the intersection of Academy Road and Maple Avenue in what was then part of Alma Township. In 1850, when Alma Township was organized as Pike County, Anna became its first female citizen. She continued to run her store until her death in 1865. In 1859, two brothers – George Washington Baylor (1824-1911) and Daniel Webster Baylor (1827-1900) – arrived from Kentucky to start a small cotton plantation near Alma called Baylor Manor/ tendersfarm No.(now demolished). They hired help to cultivate land around their plantation house which they named "Belleville." After several years of working on their own behalf as owner/ operators of Baylor Manor/ tendersfarm No., they sold it to Absalom White in 1865 for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). Bellefontaine Neighbors was a small community in Phelps County, Missouri, United States. The community was located on the east side of Bellefontaine Road, about nine miles south of the city of Independence. It consisted of a few houses and a small cemetery. Bellefontaine Neighbors was laid out in 1871 by J.C. Nichols and Wm. Hargrave. In 1881, the population of Bellefontaine Neighbor had dwindled to just six people when two local farmers bought land near Bellefontaine Roads intersection and started developing it into a town named after them, Bellefontaine Township. The first store opened in 1883 and became the nucleus around which continued growth occurred until 1955 when all but one building were destroyed by fire.
