Ballwin is one of the oldest cities in America and has been around since 1821 when it was founded as a trading post by General David Dixon and his men. The city was named for General Robert E. Lee who fought in the American Civil War there. Ballwin became an important agricultural center after railroad construction started in the area in 1868. The city's economy changed with automobiles starting to be popular beginning in the early 1920s and Ballwin becoming a major suburb of Springfield by 1930. The first white person to live permanently in Ballwin was James Hickey on November 11, 1821 when he moved from Bloomington, Illinois to establish a trading post here with General David Dixon and his men during the war against Native Americans known as "the Great Sioux Campaign". At this time, Bolling Creek ran through what is now downtown Ballwin and Hickey built a stockade along its banks to protect his belongings from raiders or warriors searching for food or horses for their own army." Hickey's post served as an important transportation hub connectingSpringfield with other parts of Missouri Valley via wagon roadways which were still used centuries later until they were replaced by Highway 12 (now I-435) two decades ago. In 1825, Daniel Boone came through town on route 69 while exploring what would become Arkansas Territory; he recommended that future settlers travel east rather than west on high ground near present-day Rolla because of access to water resources then available only south of Stonington (present day Lebanon). This eastern routing led to today’s northeast corner of Gallatin County where Ballwin meets United States Route 22 just north of Interstate 44/US 24 Alternate

Grant's father-in-law, James Buchanan Ball. On January 1, 1847, the American Civil War began when Confederate forces attacked Union forces near Gentryville and Ballwin. In 1865, after the war ended and Union troops were withdrawn from Missouri Valley territory east of Springfield, many of the German settlers returned to their homes in Ballwin and other nearby towns. The community lost much of its population during Reconstruction because most farmers moved west to new areas or left due to economic hardship caused by Reconstruction policies supported by President Abraham Lincoln. The post office closed on May 15th 1953 and all services were discontinued less than two years later on July 25th 1955 due to budget cuts within the US Postal Service caused by economic recession at that time.
