Ballwin is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ballwin area began as a small farmers' village named Unionville in 1818. By 1834 it had become the town of Ballwin, named for James K. Ballinger, an early settler and one of the original incorporators to the town site. In 1865, when Kansas became a state, Ballwin incorporated as a city; it remained so until its annexation by Springfield in 2000. After his death in 1824, General James Kappballinger's son William Kappballinger donated land to establish what would become Ballwin Township (now St. Francois County). When William died unmarried in 1830 and his estate divided among his four children - two daughters married men and took their fathers lands within ballwin township while two sons inherited nothing - one daughter chose to keep her father's land within ballwin township while moving herself and her husband also lived there with their families for many years before selling them all back to their father's heirs in 1840-41 for $4 per acre ($ today). This event which would later be called "the great sale" happened on May 12th at 2 pm when over 100 men from around the country came to purchase parcels of land from Old John Sneece who offered it at $1 per acre ($ today). After this great sale some more subdivisions were made including White Oak Dr., Maple Lawn Dr., Springdale Ave., Elmwood Dr., Many Roads Rd etc.. Over time most people here shortened their names like Smith or just plain old Kapp but that didn't stop others from adding an initial like Jones or even Slaughter to start with such as Hutton or King who started out as Hellman then changed it to Kerr then finally Slaughter after getting married here and having kids here! Then there was Jimmie Jarrell who started out as Goudreau then got married here then later changed his name back again to Kerr which I can only assume lasted until he passed away because we never heard about him again after that! All these changes along with birthdays etc just add another layer of history onto what already is something pretty amazing! An interesting fact about this place especially considering all of its different beginnings is that not one person ever died while living here! In fact they all managed somehow to live long enough either through natural causes or illnesses without dying however you could argue that some did die young like Grandma Addie who probably contracted tuberculosis during World War II or maybe Opal Key who committed suicide right before she turned 96? Anyway no matter how you slice it there has never been one person deadudely living here throughout all these years...except maybe for one guy whose name we forget now but he may have been related somehow? Anyway lets get back down to business shall we? Ballwin was founded by James Kappballinger on May 12th 1865 under the name Unionville due to political pressure from neighboring towns Columbia and starter City of Springfield which wanted parity with each other in terms of development opportunities given they both claimed territory acquisitions made during Kansas' incorporation into the US following its admission into Congress on November 3rd 1854 (see map below). Although both cities initially agreed notto compete militarily over claimed claims – primarily those affecting water resources – hostilities quickly developed resulting in violence on multiple occasions between 1862-1863 leading both camps primarily composed entirely of settlers near present day Interstate 64 close together known locally as "The Great Sale". The final straw came when Alexander Adair killed three soldiers guarding Ulysses S Grant during a racehorse auction at nearby Cairo Landing shortly after Grant had arrived Home from successfully conducting military operations against Confederate forces near Corinth, Mississippi on April 14th 1863 thereby triggering Missourians across the state into open civil war between pro-Grant hardliners (Opinion polls conducted shortly thereafter showed overwhelming majorities supporting secession based upon existingunalienced territorial boundaries) and anti-Grant moderates ( principally residents located east/central Missouri west Of Hannibal Road)). As events unfolded Custer’s cavalry emerged victorious over federal troops under General Philip Sheridan resulting in increased federal military activity throughout central Illinois threatening local communities such as Columbia whereupon Unionville decided “It would rather see my destruction than see my destruction brought about by our neighbor”.(Curtis Wahlstrom))In response Mayor Sprague formed a committee consisting largelyof himself(President pro tempore), Judge Napier ('Peggy'), Mr Fenton ('Pete')and myself(Treasurer)to negotiate peace treatyagreements thus averting full scale Civil War although skirmishes continued intermittently throughout summer & fall 1863 prior thereto; eventually peaceful resolutions were reached & citizens returned home.) According to locals Historian Bill Green has written "Thereafter things went relatively smoothly until [Civil War] erupted." The Town of Ballwin was founded in 1837 by George W. Ball, a U.S. Representative from the state of Missouri. The town’s first store was built on the current site of the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC). In 1840, Ballwin became the seat of Jackson County, which merged with Clay County in 1846 to form Jackson County, MO. For many years, Ballwin was one of the most populous and important towns in Jackson County. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Ballwin became part of newly formed St. Louis County and experienced some significant growth as a result. In 1871, however, when St. Louis County split into five districts, Ballwin lost its status as an important town and slowly declined over the next few decades until it ceased to exist altogether in 1991.
