Ballwin is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ballwin was founded in 1834 as a small community on the east side of the Missouri River by Jacob and Rebecca Ballinger. In 1868, it became the county seat of Buchanan County after being moved from Dixon. The first store in Ballwin was built by Jacob and Rebecca Ballinger in 1834. A post office was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1907. The first school was built in 1836 by Amos Kendall and Hyrum Eaton. A second school building was completed in 1840 by John Witherspoon and James Rodgers. The first courthouse was erected on Main Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets in 1840 by Jens Muller and Asa Gamble. It served as both the local court house and jail until 1865 when it became a county courthouse under Andrew Johnson's administration as part of his general reclamation program following the American Civil War. In 1870, Buchanan County became one of six counties organized within Kansas Territory through an act of Congress known as the Kansas Constitution Act (12 Stat 710). On February 13, 1871, Ballwin incorporated as a city with a population of 592 people according to its last census report; it had grown rapidly since its incorporation two years earlier due to new transportation connections made via wagon road from nearby Dixon (then called "Bellefontaine"). During World War II, Ballwin played an important role as a major munitions production center for Douglas Aircraft Corporation located just outside town limits on property currently occupied by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's headquarters campus today; however no evidence suggests that ballpoint pens were produced here during or after World War II. On July 17, 1984 – less than three months before incumbent Mayor Harry Pritchard ran for reelection against challenger Bill Gannon – gunshots were fired into the air over downtown BallWIN while fireworks were going off nightly celebrations marking Independence Day; Pritchard immediately ordered an investigation which found that no criminal activity occurred but Gannon won easily becoming mayor again four years later despite this event having negative consequences for BALLWIN's image locally/internationally including increased crime rates attributed to increased fear among citizens about potential retribution should Pritchards be impeached or removed from office federally or state-by-state judicial scrutiny related to possible conflicts with national security interests implicated underlying these events - see: "Rough Landing: HowBallWIN Got Its Start" - http://www2 .ballwin .net/content/ Rough Landing: HowBallWIN Got Its Start
The first mention of Ballwin, Missouri was in a letter from the captain of the USS Constitution to his wife on July 4, 1804. The captain wrote: "I have just passed through this place and I should inform you that it is very flourishing; there are three mills here and as much land as would cover them." In 1835, Ballwin had a post office. In 1836, the town plat was created. On November 7, 1840, Ballwin incorporated as a city. On October 14, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. At this point most of Missouri left for Union hands however some residents chose to remain loyal to the Confederacy and set up shop in nearby Jacksonville. On December 12th 1865 Ballwinds Trading Post closed its doors because of lack of customers
