Ballwin is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. It is located on the eastern edge of the county seat, Putnam. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Ballwin is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO metropolitan area. The early history of Ballwin is obscure, but it likely occurred around 1810 when a group of men from Illinois arrived in what is now Ballwin and established a trading post. The first white person to reside in Ballwin was John Chapman who settled there in 1834. In 1868, local businessmen bought a tract of land east of downtown for $3 per acre; this parcel became known as "Platinum Corner". In 1870, an assay office and courthouse were built near the intersection of Highways 9 and 24. The downtown business district that exists today began to develop around this time. The first school in Ballwin was built in 1872 by teachers from Osage Township outside Springfield. By 1889, Ballwin had five schools: one public (grades 1-5), two private (grades 6-8), one Methodist (grades 9-12), and one Baptist (ages 13-16). A new high school was constructed in 1924 on Market Street across from town hall; it replaced an earlier schoolhouse which had been destroyed by fire several years earlier. In 1951, Interstate 44 passed through town and caused serious damage to many businesses and residences; as a result, Ballwin became an incorporated village within nearby Platteville Village Incorporated School District No 5A. In 1973, following passage of the state constitution establishing limited government underthe provisions termed " township form",Ballvin reverted back to its original status as a separate village with its own board of trustees and police force until consolidation into Platteville Village Incorporated School District No 5A occurred four years later on January 1st 1976 effective when all residents within that district were placed under one single board with responsibility for all educational needs including public health care services associated with that larger community situated geographically within that primary jurisdictional entity known scientifically as “Ballvin”

Ballwin was founded in 1868 by General George Armstrong Custer and his troops during the American Civil War. It is named after General Robert E. Lee's home of Balmy Springs, Virginia. The first post office in Ballwin was established in 1867, and it operated until 1875. In 1870, Ballwin became the county seat of Stone County. The county courthouse was built in 1908 and remains in use today. In 1916, Ballwin became an independent city and has since grown rapidly into a major center for education and business within Stone County.
On November 3, 1871, the first election in Ballwin was held. The population at that time was only 1,000. The town's first mayor was James C. Allred and its first treasurer was J.H.C. Richardson
