Ballwin, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Hills, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ballwin area has been inhabited since at least 1000 BC. In 1821, when Missouri became a state, Ballwin was incorporated as a village. A post office was established in 1851 and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first mill on the current site of Ballwin was built by James Minton in 1838. The current mill was built by George Fenton and completed in 1859. The mill produced flour for local markets and also made cheese and butter from skimmed milk. An early store and two churches were built on the present site of Ballwin between 1853 and 1865; both are now gone but remain standing as landmarks within the community today. In 1902, David Starr Jordan played football for Ballwin High School from 1893 to 1896 while attending college at nearby Washburn University (now Washburne University Community College). After playing football for one season at Washburne he returned home to play baseball for his high school team which won state championships in 1903, 1904 and 1905 under coach John Lilliehill (1863–1941). One year after Jordan's departure from ballplaying eligibility at Washburne he led his high school team to an undefeated 8-0 record while playing pitcher against eventual national champion Princeton University (1888–1964) en route to their second state championship ever (in 1906). That same year they lost only four games all season long despite starting 0-3−due largely to injury sustained defenseless during a game against local rival Clinton County (1889–1960) − what would be known as "the Miracle Season". In 1907 they reached the semi-finals of the American Association playoffs before being shut out 7−0 by then national champions Louisville Cardinals (1881–1970). Flood caught 21 games that year including 11 starts behind manager Bob Lemon (+11 saves + 2 wins), setting an NCAA record then still stands today (−9): "This man could catch anything." That same season Holy Cross finished third in conference standings but president Edward White Donnelly offered them $5000 worth of hardware if they could win 10 league titles; they accomplished this feat finishing fourth that year however because St Louis Cardinal owner Bird Hecker Field couldn't come up with $5000 each time their team qualified for playoffs. Ballwin, Missouri is a small town in southern Jefferson County, Missouri. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by George W. Ball and his brother-in-law Fenton Wiley as a small farming community named after Ball's business partner, James K. Polk. In 1840, the town incorporated and changed its name to Ballwin during the American Civil War because of its support for the Union side. After the war ended, Ballwin reverted back to its original name until it became part of Jefferson County on January 1, 1907. The city is located on the banks of the Ohio River just east of Interstate I-70 exit 11A (exit 17 for Illinois). The river forms most of downtown Ballwin's boundaries and limits its immediate area to a radius of about 2 miles around all but one side of the riverbank--the other side has been annexed by neighboring cities since incorporation. Of note are two major ballfields in town: Jeffery Field and nearby National Cash Register Park; both were built in 1923 or 1924 with donations from local businesses and citizens. In addition to its namesake ballfields (Jeffery Field and National Cash Register Park),Ballwin is also home to several museums - including an art museum founded in 1936 that features works by artists like Winslow Homer and Maynard Jackson; a history museum focused on local industry; as well as a library that was opened in 1984 adjacent to Jeffery Field Stadium1. Additionally, there are over 60 acres used for outdoor recreation - mostly hiking/biking trails running along multiple rivers within walking distance of downtown Ballwin2
