Ballwin, Missouri is located in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri and is part of the larger Ballwin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on August 14, 1871, by citizens of Springfield Township. It became a city on December 3, 1907. As of the 2010 census, Ballwin had a population of 362 people. The first settlers in what would become Ballwin were farmers who arrived in 1851 from Ohio. They started a small farm and eventually built a gristmill and sawmill around which they generated their own income. In 1861, John Fenton purchased land adjacent to the mill from the previous owner and began developing it into a town with his family as its initial residents. By 1870, there were over fifty homes in Ballwin with twenty-one families living together inside two churches erected that year for services conducted by Rev. Wm Hoggarty and Rev. Jno Dickson respectively. In 1907, when Springfield Township merged into Ballwin City limits, balloting took place among its citizens to determine whether or not to change their name to “Ballwin” after then-Mayor George Biddle’s suggestion (made during an election campaign). The vote was 60% in favor while 40% opposed; thus “Ballwin” was adopted as the city’s new name effective December 3rd of that year. Only one inhabitant of what would become Ballwin – Harry Smeaton – objected to this decision; he remained within Springfield Township until his death on January 2nd of 1915 due to old age at eighty-two years old! Municipal boundaries shifted several times over time as various municipalities amalgamated or merged with other ones; however, all current municipal boundaries stem from the original townsite boundary which ran along Main Street from east to west (the present day intersection of Elmira Road and State Route 169). Municipalities which originated outside of BallWIN include Park (1912), White Sands (1915), Perrysburg (1920), Shawnee Heights (1925), New Ulm (1929), Grasshopper Lakeview/Norman Hills/Lincoln Hills/Peak Valley Woods (1939) and Pigeon HillVillage/Bentonville(1945). An interesting footnote aboutballWIN: According to local historian Dwight Barton Jr., when Judge Rollin Stephenson died suddenly at the age of seventy-six years old on November 15th 1870 leaving no children behind him but millions in debts owed him by others including Mayor George Biddle - Standard Oil Company organized a public subscription appeal drive known as The Stephenson Gift for Judge Rollin's funeral expenses amounting $611 contributed by 363 individuals making up just under 50% percentage ($1 per person)of all eligible donors statewide! This marked Standard Oil Company's first major foray into philanthropy!

In 1805, the United States Congress passed a bill allowing for American settlers to settle in what is now Ballwin. The town quickly grew and became a key stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1836, Ballwin received its charter from the Missouri General Assembly. The town prospered until World War II when it experienced significant economic decline due to the war and post-war recession. Today, Ballwin is an important regional center with a growing population of residents who are engaged in various businesses including education, research and development, healthcare and government services.
