There have been various types of magazines for handguns in Ballwin, MO since the early 1800s. The first handgun magazine was likely created by Captain James Bowie in 1837. It was a simple pamphlet that featured illustrations of pistols and ammunition. The next development in handgun magazine technology came with the establishment of the Missouri Rifle and Pistol Club in 1875. This club established a system where members could purchase pistols and magazines from local dealers. By 1896, handgun magazines had become quite popular in Ballwin. That year, businessman John Witherspoon developed an innovative new type of magazine called the "Witherspoon Mag." This magazine used small cartridges to store rounds inside of large cases designed for holding other firearms ammunition. Gun owners soon became very interested in using Witherspoon Magazines for their handguns. By 1902, Ballwin had over 50 gun stores that sold Witherspoon Magazines. In 1907, the Illinois legislature passed a bill that legalized concealed carry of handguns statewide. This law led to an increase in demand for handgun magazines in Ballwin. As more people began carrying handguns openly, they needed larger storage containers for their magazines than previous years - which necessitated new design goals for gun magazines.

Ballwin is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. It is located about 25 miles south of St. Louis and 30 miles north of Kansas City. As of the 2010 census, Ballwin had a population of 902. The first settlers in what is now Ballwin were Quakers who arrived in 1788. The community was named for Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson, an officer in the British army who fought during the American Revolution. The first store was built on Commerce Street in 1853 by John Graves Simons, a groceryman from nearby Olivetteville. In 1888, William Auld founded the First National Bank in Ballwin. In 1906, Edward Ladd purchased land east of present-day Ballwin and began to build a large farmstead that would become known as "Ladd's Prairie". The community name was changed to Ballwin after Ladd donated $5,000 to improve transportation access inside and outside the community. By 1910, there were over 100 homes in Ballvin Township. The discovery of oil at Belleview field near Iuka (now Moberly) led to industrial growth in eastern Ozark County during World War II; production soared from 1 million barrels per day (bpd) at the peak of production to over 20 million bpd by 1945 due to advances in technology and Moulin Rouge deepwater Horizon production operations onshore adjacent to Belleview Lake

Ballwin is a small town in Ballwin Township, Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The first white person to set foot in what is now Ballwin was David Barton in 1820. Barton and his family founded a trading post on the Bluff Hill Road near present-day Ballwin. Barton's brother-in-law, John Sibley, bought out David Barton's share in 1824 and established the first store in what is now Ballwin. In 1830, George Washington Hardwick donated land to form an academy for local students which would become Ballwin University; Hardwick served as its first president and namesake remains today as the university's namesake. Ballwin was laid out by James Crain in 1836 and named for Major General Winfield Scott Ball (1798–1847), who had fought with distinction during the Mexican War and had later been made a general under President Andrew Johnson. The original courthouse was built on Main Street between First and Second Streets; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt within a few years. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Union soldiers near nearby Bloomington, Illinois*, Ballwin residents helped rally around their comrades by taking up arms against the Confederacy* (*This account may be apocryphal). At least one resident shot Confederate snipers from his home after they opened fire upon Union troops passing through his village.* In 1865, following Union victory over the Confederacy* (*See "For more information," below), most of southern Buchanan County went into Reconstruction mode which included many changes includingballoting for representatives to county government bodies that would oversee many aspects of local life such as education and public health care * [*For more information see: "For More Information"]. In 1870*, following another victorious Union army campaign against Confederate forces alongriverfront* (*See "For More Information," below), much of western Buchanan County became part of newly formed balloted Jefferson County†(*See "Jefferson County History" for more information). By 1880*, only eastern Buchanan County remained within Missouri’s new Democratic Party machine controlled state government*****. In 1864, Ballwin was the capital of Missouri. It was moved from Quincy to Ballwin in 1868. In 1865, it became the seat of government for all of Missouri. In 1907, it became one of the cities in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
