Ballwin, Missouri is a small town in Hardin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The Ballwin Historic District is a nationally registered historic district that encompasses 309 buildings and 2 blocks of land in the central business district of Ballwin. They are mostly residences dating back to the early 1800s with a few businesses also included. It is one of 18 districts in Hardin County designated as such by the National Register of Historic Places. Ballwin was founded on October 6, 1833 by Col. George Aiken and his group of settlers from Kentucky who were looking for land to settle after their discovery of gold in California. He named it "Ballwin" after his home state of Kentucky. In 1836, John Senter arrived from Illinois and began preaching Christianity in what became known as "The Colony." He soon realized there were many miles (kilometers) of empty country between him and any potential settlements so he started building houses for himself and his followers on several tracts of land that he had acquired east of Ballwin River. By 1840, Senter had erected over 50 houses including three churches - Christ Episcopal Church (1840), First Presbyterian Church (1841), and Second Presbyterian Church (1843). In 1847, Vandalia College was established in nearby St Joseph when Judge Edward Hickson donated farmland for the school which would later become University Park Cemetery with an adjacent high school campus then called Hickson Academy until it merged into MO State University in 1967). On November 15th 1861 General Oliver O'Hara's brigade under Major-General Robert Ewing crossed the Arkansas River at this site unopposed while marching southward towards Little Rock to suppress local slave revolts; they camped overnight near present day Ballwin before continuing their march the next day northeast to Fenton where they destroyed two bridges over Big Sandy Creek. When news reached General O'Hara about this event he ordered his troops not to cross but instead march northward through Clarksville whereupon they encountered Confederate forces under Brigadier General Nathaniel Banks who surrendered without resistance on November 17th 1861 without inflicting any damage or loss on either side according to some sources while others claim that Banks did not actually surrender until after midnight due to poor visibility given the night's rainstorm; nevertheless both sides emerged from this encounter relatively unscathed aside from some horses being lost during battle which may have beencaused by Union cavalry raiding operations during these times In 1865 Union General James K. Polk invaded Missouri following Abraham Lincoln's election as President resulting in four days long civil war fought along Missouri’s eastern border with Kentucky starting May 11th 1865 at Bentonville Arkansas Territory cornering Greencastle Pike just west of today’s Scottdale Township southeast cornering US-61/MO-12 exit #2B inside Little Rock all within 4 miles (6 kilometers)of present day Ozark Hillsborough Township located east side only 3/4 mile (.50 kilometers)from modern day Ballwin town limits . Over 7500 men died during these conflicts making it one of bloodiest ever wars up until then . In 1854, Edwin M. Ballwin was elected as a Democrat to the Missouri state legislature. In 1861, he served in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. After the war, Ballwin resumed his political career and was re-elected to the Missouri legislature in 1865. He served until 1871 when he resigned because of health problems. From 1871 until his death, Ballwin was secretary of state for Missouri.
