Ballwin is a small, agricultural town in eastern Missouri, United States. The population was 8,769 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Ballwin was founded in 1871 by two brothers, John and Jesse Ballwin. In 1893, it became the county seat of Star City Township. In 1907, it merged with other townships to form Cimarron Township. In 1911, it became part of Dixon County and in 1925 it was renamed Ballwin after General James A. Ballwin Jr., who had been general secretary of the American Legion from 1922 to 1924. The original townsite has since been lost and its remains are only visible as a local landmark on US Route 61 which runs through the town center. The first settlers arrived in what is now Ballwin around 1871 when two brothers named John and Jesse Ballwin moved from Illinois to start a farm thereabouts. They were followed by their families over time and various others joined them on the property until it eventually encompassed more than square miles (2 km²). At that point, they decided to name their new community "Ballwin", after General James A. Ballwini Jr., who had played an important role in helping secure American independence during the War for Independence (1812-1814). When one considers that at that time most people living east of Stroudsburg did not even know about America's capital city – Washington D.C.–it can be seen why this choice made sense logistically speaking! In 1893, when Star City Township came into existence as a result of mergers between various townships within Dixon County, ballWIN became its county seat - making it one of only four counties then in Missouri without such distinctions although all but three were political subdivisions under state jurisdiction (the exceptions being Ottawa County which was still part of Ohio). That same year also saw another major change with the addition of Cimarron Township - formed from parts of nearby Willard and Hinsdale Townships following a land swap between those communities and Dixon County officials during term limits proceedings triggered by President Grover Cleveland's election victory over Zachary Taylor! With so many newcomers coming to this newly created township – many from Illinois – development proceeded relatively quickly indeed! It wasn't until 1907 that Cimarron Township finally attained jurisdictional status as its own separate entity within Dixon County - though much slower progress was made thereafter due largely to lack of interest or investment on behalf of either party concerned! The settling process typically took place over several months leading up to July 1st when all residents were required to move into their new homes! By 1925 however, things had started moving along rapidly enough forBall WIN to be renamed for General James A .A .ballWINJr., effective January 1st following his retirement from military service prior thereto!
