Ballwin is a small town in Ballwin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,504 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become Ballwin was made on the west side of the current city limits in 1837 by Methodist Episcopal missionaries. The community grew rapidly due to its location near two major railroads and its proximity to three military installations: Fort Riley (now Kansas City), Fort Bates (now Wichita), and Fort Donelson (now Hannibal). The cotton gin was built there in 1851 by J.N. Myles and became operational that year. In 1874, a post office called "Ballwin" was established at the junction of Virginia Street and Elm Street; it continued to be used until 1901. In 1907, Ballwin incorporated as a city under state law; it remained an unincorporated community until 1994 when it became one of five cities located within Springfield Township., with voting rights granted to residents who met certain requirements including having paid property taxes since 1896 and having a population over 25 percent of all residents age 25 years or older on July 1st of each year since 1990. On December 12, 1945 Union Pacific Railroad opened up a new line through Ballwin from St Louis via Independence Avenue; this led to BALLWIN's nickname "the Gateway To nowhere." A new civic center was built in 1954 which served as the centerpiece for Ballwin's growth into an sizeable city over the next several decades thanks to its annexation by neighboring Springfield Township.; during this time much progress was made in developing infrastructure such as water supplies, sewerage systems, and transportation systems for both Ballwin City Limits and Springfield Township., which has now helped contribute significantly to local economic development throughout the years

Ballwin, Missouri is a small town in the state of Missouri. It was founded by George Stephenson in 1825, and has been inhabited since then. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. Ballwin is located in Daviess County. The name "Ballwin" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where reeds grow." In 1827, Stephenson built the first steamboat on the Missouri River, and named it after Ballwin (in Scotland). BALLWIN: A History Ballwin was established as a trading post on July 20, 1825 by George Stephenson and James Wilkinson. The post office was established at Ballwin on November 12, 1830 by John Sutter. On October 8, 1836, Henry Clay became the third U.S. president and announced his candidacy for re-election with two weeks remaining in his term before he left for Europe to campaign against Andrew Jackson. At this time there were only three locations in Daviess County that could hold an election: Springfield (then called St Louis), Liberty Township (now part of Kansas City), and Ballwin village (now part of Johnson City). After Clay's announcement he moved his headquarters from Liberty Township to Ballwin on December 3rd but continued campaigning until January 6th when he resigned from politics to return home to Britain for treatment for throat problems; however he would not be able to serve out his full term due to health concerns He returned to America on January 13th and took up residence in Independence Hall where he served as Ulysses S Grant's vice president From 1865-1868 he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of America at Paris under General Ulysses S Grant In 1870-1871 he represented the United States at the International Congress held at Vienna He died August 29th 1888 after a long illness at age 77 years
On November 3, 1812, a group of men from Ballwin, Missouri organized a militia to protect the town from friendly Indians. The militia was successful in repelling an Indian attack and soon became known as the "Cavalry of Ballwin." In 1815, the town charter was amended to allow for a school and other municipal improvements. On January 1, 1820, the first post office was established in Ballwin. In 1827, the town acquired its own ZIP code.
