By 1840, Arnold had two stores, a schoolhouse, a post office, a storehouse, a barns/chambers house (now used as apartments), several churches including one Roman Catholic church which predated prohibition by more than thirty years, several residences including three log cabinrees still standing; five schools - one public (for white children only) operated by subscription; four private schools: two seminary-like academies for boysoperated by Dutch Reformed missionaries; an academy run by German Lutherans; an agricultural college established to teach methods of raising corn and beans on large tracts of virgin prairies near present day Kansas City; A hotel called "the Grange" which served as headquarters for many wagon trains crossing into Indian Territory during this time period; A blacksmith shop where pistols were made from bronze coins donated by local merchants; A dairy where milk was sold until 1870 when it became a grocery store.; A few businesses later closed down because of competition or economic hard times.: During World War II (1939-1945), Arnold participated prominently in various military campaigns including Battle of Pea Ridge (March 9-13, 1942), Battle of Chalgrave Mountain (April 7-10, 1943), Siege of Stroudsburg (October 16- November 8 1945), et cetera. After the war ended Armistice Day 1945 on September 2nd,, much activity slowed down due to reconstruction efforts that were underway across all U S . entities following World War II’s end.. Businesses picked up again slowly but steadily over ensuing months until 1948 when incorporation occurred which led to rapid growth within just six years! That same year saw first Baptist Church built followed soon thereafter by First Methodist Church & sanctuary addition while nearby homebuilder erected fourth home on Main Street!.
