Arnold is located in the Ozarks of Missouri, and it has a long and diverse history with firearms. The city first began to be inhabited by Native Americans about 10,000 years ago. There was an early hunter-gatherer culture here that allowed for the development of hunting skills. Eventually, the area became part of the French colony of Louisiana in 1763. With France's defeat in the American Revolution, Arnold became part of Missouri Territory. In 1821, it was renamed Arnold after General James Arny (1790-1864). At this time, Arnold was one of the largest cities in Missouri and had nearly 100 miles of railroad lines running through it. In 1835, Texas Rangers shotand killed five people at a trading post east of Arnold. This event led to increased competition between Texan settlers and native hunters for food resources around hereabouts. This situation eventually led to open warfare between settlers and natives beginning in 1839-40 when settlers tried to drive out Indian traders from their traditional hunting grounds near Arnold. The first gunfight fought in Missouri took place on November 25th, 1839 when two groups of Texans - one led by Captain John Sikes - raided an Indian village east of town while under cover of darkness. A short fire ensued as both sides fired shotguns at close range but no damage was done; there were no casualties on either side! On December 4th,1839, three men - John Cushing (age 26), Jesse Hughes (age 21), or Nathan giglio (age 20) - traveled from Nashville into Armstrong County looking for cattle belonging to Captains Sikes and James Whitehead along with seven other Texans who had gone off scouting mission some weeks earlier without telling anyone where they were going! They stopped at a small creek called Spring Branch just southwest of town on October 3rd before continuing northwest towards what is now Crystal Lake! Just after sunrise on October 5th they discovered four Indians huddled around cooking fires within rifle range waiting for them! After exchanging shots with these Indians without result they returned home without further incident... however Hughes died from his injuries not long afterwards! It should be noted that although Captain Sikes' party never encountered any hostile Indians during their foray into Armstrong County (!), he did lose several horses due to tracking error caused by his guide John Cushing - which may have been why Texas Rangers began persecuting Native Americans living west Of Kansas City more aggressively starting about 1840?
