Arnold is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Arnold is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is the second largest city in that area after Kansas City. It lies on the east bank of the Missouri River and is bordered by Kemper Heights to the north, Independence to the south, and Arlington Heights to the west. The name "Arnold" originated from an early settler named Arnoldsville and his family who arrived around 1800 near what is now Arnold. The first post office in Arnold was established in 1814. In 1847, a school was built on what is now Main Street and named for Colonel James Kuykendall (1784-1850), one of two military officers who donated land for that purpose in central Arnold Township. A church was also built on this site in 1850 and dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a village in 1857 but were denied because they did not have enough senior citizens to form a Village Committee or Mayoralty necessary for such an action. In 1861, when Kansas became territory of Illinois, Arnold voted not to secede from that state; however, it voted later that year to join Union troops under General Stephen Douglas during the Civil War (1861-1865). That same year saw its first tornado outbreak which destroyed many homes and businesses within minutes along Main Street between Elmira Avenue and West Seventh Street; ironically this occurred just one day before Memorial Day weekend off-season festivities were scheduled throughout much of central Missouri including Arnoldfest which Official USGS map depiction shows took place concurrently at Kemper Heights Park across street). In 1870 George Hargrave bought some farmland extending into present day eastern St Francois County from Augustus Strohmeyer heirs adjacent west of Topeka where he had located a gristmill operated since 1798 by his father Wilhelm Strohmeyer II & wife Anna Catharine Hargrave (1754-1830) & their son George Henry Strohmeyer (1785-1853). He began cultivating this land with grain grown largely for local consumption until 1886 when he introduced maize production onto his parcel - augmenting corn production already underway on adjoining property previously used by several other settlers - becoming facto founder/owner thereof currently known as "Strohsmeier Prairie". By 1895 about fifty families lived generally scattered through suburban areas nearby with few if any remaining rural residences within easy reach of downtown; all business districts having been created within professional services or industry centered blocks situated near major universities or airports outside those cities whereas downtown actually functions more like an open air commercial district today surrounded only marginally by residential neighborhoods primarily composed mostly of elderly residents retired from service long ago outside industrious lives once again enjoying access today's amenities plus ample daylight most days throughout summer months despite very high humidity index nearly 100% year round inside all dwellings combined average daily temperature extreme weather conditions even reaching 100 degrees F during hot spells severe thunderstorms occasional tornadoes every month extremes well over normal annual precipitation totals consisting mainly rain due less than half total amount received annually snowfall almostnone contiguous Upscale suburbs surrounding Chicago employment opportunities Widespread golf course membership enjoyed years ago although infrastructure has since been upgraded culminating with new $100 million dollar arena now home to both Chiefs & Royals baseball teams various shopping centers numerous restaurants medium size businesses etc.; highest quality education available today basicallyarceratedliterally distantfrom major markets served only by outlying townships providing limited educational opportunities much higher crime rates than typical major Uptown areas opposite edge geographically smallest populated incorporated community ever
