The current name was given to the city by a vote of residents in 1912 after they bought $2,000 worth of advertising space from local paper manufacturer John J. Arnold. The city has been home to many businesses over its history including Armour & Company (now Arnette Corporation), Consolidated Edison (later ConEd), and First National Bank (formerly First National Bankshares). Arnold is located at 36°53′N 95°25′W / 36·63 N 96·27 W / -95·26 W (36.786667, -95·269167). It has an elevation of 1,372 feet (457 m). According to the 2010 census, the population density is 2,512 people per square mile (1,028/km²). There are also several small lakes within town limits that make up part of nearby rolling hills that contain farmland used for food production such as corn and soybeans as well as other crops such as wheat and hay; these areas have not changed much since 1910 when they were part of what was called "the Hill Country". The economy in Arnold depends largely on agriculture which includes corn production for ethanol fuel production and animal husbandry for meat products such as pork and beef; fishing provides some income but no employment opportunities outside subsistence farming. Manufacturing has had a limited impact on the local economy with most jobs coming through services provided by larger employers withinJohnson County or outside state borders such as ConEd or Hormel Foods Inc.. A few factories closed during 2001-2006 but overall manufacturing employs only about 10% of locals while service jobs account for 90%. Some new construction projects are currently under way or planned in order to bring more economic development to this struggling community; including a new shopping mall being built adjacent to Interstate 44 near Route 23rd Street which will house anchor stores like Sears Holdings Corp., JCPenney Co., Macy's Inc., Best Buy Co., Apple Inc., Lowe's Home Builders Warehouse etc.; along with office buildings for local government officials like Mayor Brady Bowman and City Council members Corey Barnes and Donnie Smith among others Other plans include developing land around I-44 eastward into rural Johnson County where there are potential acres available for mixed use with agricultural purposes specifically; this area would include a large industrial park complete with housing developments surrounding it if successful
