Arnold, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. Arnold is located on the eastern edge of the county and includes what was once the community of Arlington. The name "Arnold" comes from pioneer George Armstrong Custer's location near present-day Arnold on his 1847 trip from St. Louis to Dodge City in Kansas. The first settler in Arnold was James Fenton, who arrived in 1837. He built a log cabin and named it Post Office Camp Fenton after himself and his post office at that site until 1840 when he moved to what is now Arnold proper. James Fenton's son John erected a frame house on which he lived until 1849 when he married Rachelle Aiken and built a second frame house there also. They raised six children here: three girls (Emily, Anna, Frances), two boys (John L., William) and one girl (Rachelle). In 1865, Postmaster General Franklin D. Roosevelt recommended moving post offices eastward towards Chicago as part of his plan for faster postal service delivery through increased railroad travel across the U S . After some debate within the government about whether or not to move posts eastward, President Abraham Lincoln approved Roosevelt's recommendation on February 17th 1865 with an executive order known as Executive Order No . 9191 . On March 1st 1865 local residents met to select a new post office site - located between Cedar Grove Road north of town and Old National Road south of town - with Wm Haggerty chosen as builder and postmistress Mrs Helen Sawyer appointed first wife of First Mayor George Pugh after her husband resigned due to health problems in 1865 On May 22nd 1865 Rachelle Aiken died suddenly while cooking supper for her family at their new home; she had been married only two months that year. Two days later ,Wm Haggerty erected Rachelle Aiken Burial Ground just northwest of today’s intersection of Elmwood Avenue & Post Road where she rests today alongside her husbands parents both born here around 1825 Three years later on October 11th 1870 James Fenton died suddenly aged 64 years; he had been farming here since 1850 Today Arnold has 6 schools: 4 elementary schools (grades K-4), 2 middle schools (5-8), 1 high school (9-12) There are also several businesses and churches including Archer Baptist Church which opened its doors in 1907 A recent addition to this small town is The Arboretum & Garden which recently reopened under new ownership after being closed for many years
