Arnold is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area and is bordered by cities of Independence and Osage Beach on the south, Lee's Summit on the east, Kansansville on the north, and Overland Park on the west. The first settlers in Arnold were white men who arrived in 1839. They named their community after General John A. Arnold of Kentucky who had fought in the Mexican-American War and became an American hero. After several years of development, Arnold had a post office (1846) and two hotels (1851). In 1858 it had three churches: one Presbyterian, one Methodist Episcopal and one Catholic; two schools; a jail; a grocery store; three factories; four stores; two plantations; four farms; thirty-eight residents. By 1860 there were ninety residents. In 1863 Union General Ulysses S Grant attacked Confederate General Robert Ewell’s army at Slocum Creek near present day Topeka following an abortive raid into western Missouri by Union forces under George Armstrong Custer to capture arms caches being held by Confederate General Jefferson Davis. The attack led to what has been called “the greatest cavalry battle in American history” with over 2,000 Confederate casualties against about 300 Union soldiers In 1865 when Lincoln was assassinated President Andrew Johnson ordered all troops in Missouri to march back to Jacksonport where they would be safely stationed until new orders could be received from Washington allowing them to return home It was only later that Arnold learned Johnson had been killed and his successor Abraham Lincoln had been elected The townspeople voted not to secede from Missouri while they awaited news from Washington which never came even though martial law was declared throughout much of Kansas City due to fear for guerrilla activity by Native Americans living near the city limits

Arnold, Missouri is a town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. It lies on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The townsite was laid out by James Arnold in 1836. The first post office in Arnold was established in 1839. The town was named after General John A. Arnold, who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The name of the river where Arnold's settlement stood changed several times over its history; it became known as the "Arkansas" or "River Arkansas" and finally as "Beaver Dam Rapids". The city of Springfield was founded just upstream from Arnold and served as its principal business center for many years until it relocated to larger quarters downstream in what is now Kansas City. However, Springfield retained some vestige of its rural character through agricultural production and small-town retail shops until Recently when a large shopping mall has replaced most of these businesses providing an important economic boost to that community too . In recent years there has been efforts by people within both communities to revive downtown which is located on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets with plans for development including apartment buildings/condos and a full-service hospital
The Arnold Massacre took place on November 5, 1872, when Confederate soldiers killed nine Union civilians in the town of Arnold, Missouri. The massacre was one of several such incidents during the Civil War.
