Yazoo City, Mississippi is a small town in Yazoo County, Mississippi on the banks of the Yazoo River. The population was 2,023 at the 2010 census. Polk approved changes made by Commissioner John Pemberton to a plan submitted by Major General David Dixon which proposed that instead of one large village there should be several smaller villages consolidated under one roof as part of development plans for this area known as Auburn Plantation and other areas west of Memphis into which Memphis had been annexed during the Mexican period (1823–1846). This consolidation took place between 1824 and 1830; but no new settlements were created until 1840 when two men founded what became known as White Hall on land acquired from Lovejoy Graves & Co., merchants active in Nashville at that time (later renamed Tupelo).
