This business was started by three men- John A. Covington, Hiram Swayne and George Witherspoon- who believed that handgun ownership should be available to all Mississippians. The white residents of Yazoo City formed a militia to protect themselves from black crime. The second self defense Weapon manufacturing company was The Arsenal Company which was founded by Solomon Northup and Jno. Biddle in 1892. This company made revolvers, shotguns and pistols for the police and militia forces of Yazoo City. Northup purchased land at Fourth Avenue and Court Street in Yazoo City in 1892, making him the first person to own land in the city limits. In 1896, Benjamin Butler opened his own armory on Third Avenue in Yazoo City which became known as The Butler Armory (later renamed The Arsenal). This armory manufactured handguns for both law enforcement officers and the militia forces of Yazoo City (the precursor to the present day Mississippi State Police). In 1907, Butler merged with White Arms Armory (then called The Armoury) creating one of the largest firearms manufacturers east of the Mississippi River. In 1912, Rufus King established Terminal Arms Corporation on First Street in downtown Yazoo City which manufactures handguns as well as shotguns and rifles for law enforcement agencies throughout Mississippi (now Alabama). In 1916, Jack Dempsey purchased Terminal Arms Corporation from Rufus King becoming one of America's most successful sportsmen when he won an Olympic boxing championship using Terminal Arms firearms. In 1929-1930, Western Defense Manufacturing Company was established on Fourth Avenue by Herculaner Flintoff who had been fired from Eastern Defense Manufacturing Company after making several unsuccessful products including a Pistol designed specifically for use by Negroes! Flintoff developed this pistol into what is today known as the Browning Hi-Power rifle which saw service with both American Marine Infantry during World War II (and has been used by many NRA members ever since) as well as being exported to many other countries around the world!
