In 1865, Yazoo City became a city when it ratified a charter from Mississippi General Assembly and passed an ordinance creating police authority and allowing for public lighting and street repairs. In 1903, there were only 175 residents living in Yazoo City; however, by 1907 there were 1,500 residents living in town with twelve businesses active in commerce including three grocery stores and six cotton ginners. By 1930, over 4,000 people lived in downtown YazooCity with twenty-six businesses including four hotels and two banks employing over 1,200 workers during peak hours which averaged nearly sixty per hour during business days; this made Yazoosville one of America's largest cities during that time period according to US Census Bureau figures During World War II most everyone who worked downtown had their skills used both within industry (manufacturing) As recently as 1990 about 60% of all jobs were outside Industry Manufacturing now accounts for less than 25% Commerce now employs more than 100% locally resident workforce
