Yazoo City, Mississippi is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. Yazoo City is the county seat of Hinds County. Yazoo City is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town of Yazoo City was founded in 1853 by John and Nancy (Neely) Greene as a station on the Great River Road between Jackson and Vicksburg. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location near two major rivers and its access to timber and agricultural land. In 1864, Nathan Bedford Forrest led an expedition into Hinds County to claim it for Confederate States of America. The town's growth continued as cotton plantations were developed around it, and businesses such as banks, hotels, mines, stores and churches sprang up. In 1870–71 Yazoo City became part of the new Uniontown Municipality when it was created from parts of Jackson and Meridian counties. Yazoo City experienced significant progress during World War II with the construction of military airfields in nearby Tupelo and Gulfport that would play an important role in Allied victory over Nazi Germany. However, after Pearl Harbor; conditions deteriorated rapidly for civilians within range of Japanese forces operating out of Japan's main base at Mariana Islands; many people withdrew to safety while others fled inland or into Canada or Latin America before finally returning home following the war's end in 1945. The once thriving town never regained its former glory; however some remnants remain including an oak tree taller than any other found in Mississippi that has been preserved as a public property asset since 1984

Yazoo City is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County and the only municipality in Yazoo County. The community was named after its founder, Major James Fenton Yazo. The town was founded by Major James Fenton Yazo on November 7, 1841 as a trading post on Snake River between present-day Jackson and Natchez Counties. He renamed it after himself to honor his family's arrival from Kentucky with their wagon train in 1840. The first post office was established in 1843 and held until it closed in 1865. In 1851, the town obtained land from the Federal government for $1 per acre (0¢ per mile). It became an incorporated village on December 1, 1861 under a new ordinance passed by the state legislature which designated all towns within .5 miles of Memphis as "villeges". On February 14, 1872–73, Yazoo City residents voted to annex Marshall Township due to high cotton prices and lack of available water sources for irrigation purposes outside of Memphis. On July 1, 1907–08 two oil wells were drilled west of downtown Yazoo City by Standard Oil Company Limited; however no production occurred because of low water pressure at that time. In 1916 zinc mining began near downtown; however this also did not result in any significant production until well-head efforts were made elsewhere during World War II when zinc demand increased because artillery shells were being made more important than ever before due to their incendiary properties This netted $9 million over 4 years ending 1945
