Yazoo City, Mississippi, is a city in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Yazoo City is home to the Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge and the Yazoo American Folklife Museum. The community was founded in 1873 as a small town on the edge of present-day Jackson County by white settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky. The area that would become Yazoo City was first settled by Native Americans such as the Creeks and Cherokees. In 1786, Captain James Wilkinson erected a post on what is now State Street in what is now Yazoo City. It was here that Wilkinson established contact with white traders who were then trading with Indian nations east of the Appalachian Mountains. By 1800, several families had moved to this location and started to build homes. One of these families was the Wickershams who built their house on what is now Fourth Street just west of Interstate 20 bridge. In 1873, white settlement began along present-day creek banks south of downtown when some men from Tennessee (the early settler party) decided to come downriver for water supplies and land purchase purposes only to find that there were no suitable sites for farming near where they looked for water supply sources. They set up camp on high ground overlooking river below which later became known as "The Hill." The men named their new town after General Andrew Jackson who had won fame during his victory over British forces at New Orleans two years earlier. Shortly thereafter some more men from Tennessee arrived and soon others began arriving from other parts of America as well including Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois etc., until by 1870 it appeared that all but one family living in "The Hill" were cotton farmers or planters interested only in getting rich quick through crop production rather than long term development or care for their local environment/community involvement like many other people among whom they lived engaged in such activities as cooking meals daily while tending fields; building fences; repairing roads; whitewashing buildings; keeping chickens; playing games; singing together religious hymns before going off into work day or evening chores around their village green homey hamlet situated about northeast corner lot leading straight southwestward between creek banks fringed by tall trees shaded eucalyptus grove extending about southeast corner lot thence northwestward across open prairie watered by creeks eastwardly parallel to generally westerly oriented main trunk road US 59 & State Line thence southwestward across open prairie watered by creeks northwesterly parallel to generally westerly oriented main trunk road US 79 & Post Office Rd.; name changed January 1st 1880 to Yazoo City because President James Buchanan approved boundary change resulting from Louisiana Purchase which included This District lying within newly organized Harrison County (& its adjoining territorial entities) On January 1st 1880 gold coins worth $2 per piece were introduced into this country ($50 gold certificates being accepted at time). Goldmining operations continued until 1893 when most operations ended due lack of money/Gold discovery elsewhere so few people remained in town except for a very select few servicing themselves primarily through trade with surrounding counties./Many businesses closed during 1893 depression caused largely by low commodity prices brought about stabilization efforts initiated nationally&locally&restructured government agencies following end of boom
