Yazoo City, Mississippi is a city in the Yazoo Delta of the United States. The population was 20,000 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County and is located on the banks of the Yazoo River. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1836 as a stop on his way to campaign for president. In 1840, it became a post office with its own ZIP code. The community's name comes from John Fenton Yates, who purchased land near present-day Yazoo City in 1839 and named it after himself and his wife Zora Neale Hurston (1801-1893). In 1870, white farmers started moving into what is now Yazoo City; many were displaced by African Americans migrating to Mississippi during the American Civil War and Reconstruction. In 1916, Josesph Epps bought 5% of the city's shares from Rice & Land Co., making him its first black mayor. He served one term before being impeached in 1919 for bribery and obstruction of justice while holding office; he was acquitted but returned to effective government two years later when he won re-election through fraudulence charges only to be impeached again and removed from office once more. With cotton production declining during World War II, Yazoo City began shrinking economically until 1990 when it reached an alltime high with 25,000 residents due largely to imported goods flooding into its market place following economic globalization which had arrived in Iraq starting in 1990 also spawning job opportunities there too which helped create second generation Iraqis here too among other things that has kept this vibrant community alive over time especially since then

The Yazoo City, Mississippi area was inhabited by the Mississippian culture for over 100 years before European exploration and settlement began. The first Europeans to arrive in the Yazoo area were French traders and explorers who explored the area in 1795-1796. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson invaded Mississippi and moved the British colonial capital of Mobile from its original location on Pensacola Bay to Jackson’s Landing on the Gulf of Mexico. The Spanish missions at San Fernando de la Laguna and Santa Fé (El Escorial) were also destroyed during this period. In 1821, a group of United States Marines under Commodore John D. Sloat led an attack against Spanish Fort on Mobile Bay. This event is considered to be the beginning of American exploration in what is now Mississippi. In 1824, when war with Spain began, Major General James K. Polk landed his force at New Orleans and marched towards Toulouse, Louisiana which was then under Spanish control. After several days of skirmishing, Polk reached Barcelona Barracks where he was met by Captain José Joaquín del Toro y Urdiales who reported that Spanish forces had retreated towards Baton Rouge (now Monroe). However, upon reaching Baton Rouge he found that they had not actually retreated but rather regrouped nearby at a plantation called La Grange where they awaited orders from Madrid to cross into Mexican territory proper instead of retreating further into French territory as planned. Therefore Polk ordered Del Toro to proceed northeastward along current US Highway 41 until he intersected present day US Route 49 about 10 miles south of Baton Rouge; this action effectively ended hostilities between Spain and America.[1] Spanish interest in our region waned after their victory over American forces at Buena Vista Hill in1827[2]. This left open southeastern Texas as a potential source for trade with India which greatly increased prices for goods imported into Europe through Havana Station[3]. Meanwhile new interests developed within our community as entrepreneurs became interested in developing our resources such as cotton plantations back east while others invested money into land speculation within our vicinity[4]. A return trip by Commodore Sloat on July 2nd 1830 discovered abandoned Indian villages located near present day Meridianville[5][6], providing evidence that slavery still ran rampant among Native Americans hereabouts despite prior assurances given by both Ulysses S Grant and Nicolás Maduro regarding its abolition following the end of Reconstruction era in 1865[7]. As more white settlers arrived throughout central Mississippi during 1830-1830,[8], reports started circulating about one small town known as Yazoo City located immediately northwest of Battle Creek which seemed like it would soon become a boomtown due to its natural resources including cotton fields%, water power available from various sources including bayous surrounding Yazoo City(), ample hunting opportunities (), cheap labor available (), etc.; however there never was any significant development or population growth associated with this moniker until after 1840 when riverboats starting landing people hereabouts making transportation possible across vast(ish) Delta country
ordinance of 1796 The Yazoo City, Mississippi ordinance of 1796 was passed as an amendment to the town charter on January 6, 1796. The ordinance provided for a mayor and six council members. It also established racial segregation in public transportation and amusements.
