Unfortunately for those seeking to found a new colony in what would become Mississippi Territory, several years later two wars with France ended up costing more lives and property than any amount of exploration or development ever could have imagined. In 1830 Congress passed legislation creatingMississippi Territory as part of west Louisiana which became part of United States after Mexican-American War (1846). After Jefferson Davis was elected president in 1860 he ordered General Nicholas Haysky to establish military posts throughout present-day Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee so that he could control those areas completely during the Civil War effort against Confederate forces under Robert E Lee. When news reached General Haysky about Confederate activity along the Arkansas River he decided to move his command southward into central Mississippian territory instead of risking another battle on high ground near Jacksonport where Union troops were entrenched before withdrawing back across the river less than two weeks later due to heavy rainstorms which caused flooding throughout much of northeast Arkansas including Jacksonport whereGeneral Haysky’s forces were located Governor John Sennett issued an order ordering all citizens within 10 miles of Jacksonport not to leave their homes without permission from him or higher authorities until further notice due to fears that Confederate troops might enter town undetected under cover of darkness while residents slept On September 15th 1862 Union soldiers burned down most buildings within 10 miles of Jacksonport after learning from local farmers about Confederate troop movements
