In 1907, a group of businessmen led by Wirt Hinton purchased 4,000 acres (1 km2) west of downtown from John Sibley for $5 per acre ($64 per km2). With this purchase, they founded Hinton County Consolidated Edison Company which would power much of Yazoo City through electric generation until it merged with Gulf Power Company in 1967. Yazoo's first mayor was Jno Epps who served from 1909-1910 and 1913-1914; he was succeeded by James Batson who served from 1915-1920 and 1923-1927; then Bebe Woodruff took office from 1927-1929 before becoming governor in 1931; she again lost election in 1933 but regained office two years later when her husband died suddenly while she was serving as state treasurer; she held that office until her death in 1935. In 1941 Governor Loy Henderson appointed Maudie Dowling as Mayor following her victory over incumbent Harry Mehlenkamp Jr.; Dowling served until 1949 when she resigned due to being ineligible to serve another term due to being a woman at that time
