The Yazoo City, Mississippi Armory was founded in 1854 by General John C. Frémont as the first armory in the Confederate States of America. Frémont Arms Company". It remained in operation until 1942 when it was sold to Allied munitions interests and closed down again. Yazoo City is a small town located in the Western Mississippi Valley on the banks of the Yazoo River. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Yazoo City is one of seven original towns in Jackson County, Mississippi, and it is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in that county. The first people to live here were the Oglalas who came from northern Minnesota about 1824. They were followed by the Chickasaws about 1830-1832, and by French Canadians around 1840-1845. Yazoo City was established as a town on December 15, 1871, when James A. Cook named it after his father-in-law Zebulon Lamar Jackson (1793-1865). Jackson had been elected governor of Mississippi in November 1868 and he appointed Cook to be its first mayor. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Wacoaltoa Ferry Landing on the Yazoo River and because it offered easy access to cotton plantations for farmers in surrounding counties. The city's first school was built in 1877 and its first courthouse was erected in 1909. In 1951, an act was passed which designated Yazoo City as a Federal Civilian Community under Project Habitat for Humanity auspices. Since then, many new projects have been undertaken within or adjacent to Yazoo City such as restoration of former slave quarters and construction of a new library/theater complex; among other things In 1998, Mayor David Crenshaw established "Yazoo Nation" as an outreach program which provides employment opportunities for local residents with disabilities through job training and placement programs
