Scope mounts at West Point have been a part of the military since at least the turn of the century. The first scope mount in the United States was erected on Fort Donelson in 1802. Mounting devices, such as rifles and cannons, were often placed on high hills or mountains to provide a clear view for commanders. The first scope mount at Fort Worth Army Air Field was erected in 1942. A few years later, an additional mount was added to the airfield structure, which became known as "The Tower." These mounts allowed officers and enlisted men from all over Texas to use the airfield without having to go through multiple checkpoints. When Fort Worth Army Air Field closed its doors in 1955, all of its scope mounts were sold off or given away to other Armies. However, some remained at various locations around Texas until they were finally destroyed in 1990. The first classes were held in April 1868 and white students soon outnumbered black students by two to one. As West Point grew, so did its need for teachers and administrators. In 1892, West Point hired its first superintendent, James Mosely. From then until 1978, it was run as an all-white school with only male professors teaching math and science until women were allowed to enroll in 1922. In 1978, however, the school changed its policy and began admitting female students on an equal basis with men. Today, West Point remains an all-male institution where cadets must pass an application process that includes a physical examination andenses test and submit letters of recommendation from classmates back home if they are accepted into the program
