The first white settler in what is now West Point was Abram Dvorak in 1836. He and his family founded a cabin on an island near present-day Perkins Lake. A year later, he married Anna Maria Cobb and set out for what would be his lifelong home. Mrs. Cobb's parents had come from Georgia to live with them when they were pregnant with her and Abram's first child, John Fenton Cobb (1837-1927). Abram Dvorak died two years after moving to West Point and AnnaMaria raised their six children there until she passed away in 1865; then her husband took over raising the children while also serving as postmaster at West Point until 1876 when he retired because of age 70 years old. In 1881 the United States Post Office moved to its current location on Elm Street just east of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard which coincided with the opening of Corinthian Hall School which would become known as "the most beautiful schoolhouse in America." As one observer put it: "It seemed only fair that this fine new post office should have its own building erected where Mr.-Govt., Coloreds and other favored classes could go to learn their letters without having to cross streets." In 1907 Drury Lane Elementary School opened adjacent to Corinthian Hall School becoming known as "the best public elementary school west of Memphis." The first black student enrolled at Corinthian Hall School was Alice Paul who attended there from 1922 until her expulsion in 1955 due to picketing by civil rights activists opposing segregated education within the schools system.; In 1915 Halsey Giffin became Superintendent of Schools for Jackson County; under his stewardship major changes occurred including consolidation of several schools into one large facility called Central High School which opened its doors on November 30th 1916 under the name "Halsey Giffin High". In 1951 brick vaults were built over portions of Central High School courtyard providing classrooms, administrative offices and athletic facilities for future students; these are still extant today (though not used) as part of West Point Cemetery complex located between Main Street NW & Ulysses S Grant Boulevard NE

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter awarded then-West Point graduate Billy Dee Williams his Presidential Medal of Freedom - one of only two African Americans ever given such an award (the other being Muhammad Ali).
