In West Point, Mississippi there are many stories of heroism and service that have left an indelible mark on the community. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1836 as a military installation for white settlers in what is now western Mississippi. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. By 1840, the town had become an important military garrison and during the Civil War it played a significant role in the battle of Vicksburg. In 1865, following the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House, West Point was surrendered to Union forces and became part of the Union Army Forces Tennessee Valley Area. After the war, West Point continued to grow and by 1880 it had reached its current size with over 1,200 residents. The history of West Point can be divided into three main periods: pre-war years (1836-1850), wartime years (1865-1870), and postwar years (1910-1920). It is important to remember that while much has changed since these times, some aspects of West Point's history remain static - such as its location within easy reach of both Memphis and Jacksonville; its large number of active military installations; and its strong relationships with both local government entities and private businesses. Prewar Years: 1836-1850 West Point began as a military installation for white settlers in what is now western Mississippi when General James Wilkinson established it in 1836. The original station was located on land donated by Governor John Crain near present day Marshall Field Boulevard in downtown Memphis. The station served as an artillery battery until 1850 when it became responsible for training United States soldiers for combat against Native American tribes in what is now Oklahoma Territory. During this time period,WestPoint also enjoyed some success from its strategic position within easy access to both Memphis and Jacksonville - two major cities in central Mississippi which were home to large numbers of African Americans who worked directly or indirectly for white business owners or politicians. This prosperity did not last however; after Texas annexed Louisiana in 1845, cotton prices collapsed which caused most Southern states to secede from the United States including Mississippi; Kansas & Nebraska joined Missouri while Arkansas joined Texas & New Mexico; & eastern Kentucky seceded too (the final act before secession). In addition to their lack of success with cotton production, these post-Civil War years also saw additions to Warden's garrison such as artillery batteries 3rd U S Artillery Regiment under Colonel Augustus Molineux & 4th U S Artillery Regiment under Colonel George Armstrong Custer - all manned by black men until they were disbanded during Reconstruction due to political pressure from northern Democrats seeking revenge against southern Republicans caught up in Reconstruction *. Despite this handicap though (& other factors such as heavy fighting throughout much of reconstruction) black soldiers acquitted themselves very well during World War I thanks largely to their drill sergeant/leader/supervisor role called "The Crackback"*. As hostilities increased however between America’s newly arrived second generation immigrants looking for opportunity versus “native born” Mississippians determined not only To stay alive butalso achieve respectability*, Westpoint found itself caught up completely within federal arms Race legislation†† resulted* from US president Andrew Johnson’s efforts aimed at suppressing racial tensions across America†† particularly those relatedto Slavery*** [* see footnote *]. Though ultimately unsuccessful** [*see footnote **], federal arms race regulation nonetheless created an environment ripe for violence&**** *****.
