When the United States Military Academy at West Point opened its doors in 1802, there was no rifle or pistol course. The academy instead offered a military education for men who were interested in artillery and cavalry service. To accommodate this new type of student, the Academy built a campus from scratch and began offering rifle and pistols courses. One of these students was Captain George Washington Wilkinson, who took up firearms training at West Point after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1807. Captain Wilkinson became one of America's most accomplished commanders during the War of 1812, leading American forces against British forces on several occasions. After the war ended, Captain Wilkinson returned to West Point as an instructor in gunnery and chivalry - a position he held until his death in 1836. It is interesting to note that while George Washington Wilkinson may have been one ofAmerica's most accomplished commanders during its early years as a nation, he never actually shot any firearms himself...until he attended West Point!
