West Point is a small town in Forrest County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. West Point is located on US Highway 61 and US Highway 72. The first white settlers in what is now Forrest County were Methodist missionaries from Georgia who arrived in 1836. They established a church and school in what is now West Point. In 1849, the first post office was established at West Point; it became known as "The Post Office at West Point". The town was named for General George Washington's plantation near Mount Vernon, Virginia where he had been raised before becoming an officer in the American Revolution. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers burned down the Methodist church and school while Union forces standoff away from the town center; this event helped start toename West Point as "The Confederate Capital of Mississippi" because of its strategic location between Union forces guarding Corinth (north), Starkville (south) and Jackson (east). When Union troops approached to burn down shops and residences close to downtown on October 3, 1861 they found that most residents had evacuated ahead of schedule with few possessions or effects left behind: only one man remained behind to rebuild his home after being forced out by Confederate attackers three days earlier. Aftermath of war saw a decrease in population due to all sides fighting over property and food supplies; however by 1865 there were still only 9 residents living in what became known as "West Point". By 1870 there were no more white settlers remaining except for two families who had moved into the township from other parts of Forrest County after their farm failed during Reconstruction following America's victory over slavery. From 1870-1910 total population growth averaged 2%. This increase can be attribute to numerous factors such as new industry arriving within easy commuting distance including oil production beginning operations around 1915 which would have a major impact.; also many African Americans working outside agriculture starting prior to this time began moving into townships like Forrest County seeking better opportunities than growing crops alone on difficult soil conditions resulting in an overall population growth rate similar to those experienced throughout much of America during this time period A fire destroyed most buildings in downtown west point MS on october 3rd 1861 whenConfederate Soldiers burned our churches &Schools
When Americans began purchasing firearms in the late 18th century, they had to find something to shoot. The only way to learn how to shoot was to take weapons classes from qualified experts. The first ammunition was created by a man named John Winfield in 1795. He developed what is now known as black powder ammunition and it was used for muzzle loading rifles. In 1876, a company called Winchester invented the first rifle that could fire both .22 caliber rounds and high-capacity 6mm rounds. This made shooting pistols much easier, since handguns were not yet prevalent in America. Around this time, other companies started producing ammunition for firearms too. The first classes at West Point were offered in 1824 under the direction of Major General George Washington Wilkinson. In 1825, Congress created the United States Military Academy to provide a high-quality education for American soldiers capable of leading combat campaigns abroad or holding office within our own country. Classified as an infantry school, West Point became a cavalry school in 1881; then an artillery school in 1907 before becoming a full infantry School in 1927. West Point's history can be traced back to 1795 when General Andrew Jackson moved his Headquarters from Knoxville, Tennessee to what is now Mount Pleasant Park on the banks of the Yazoo River in Jackson County, Mississippi Territory (now Perry County). The first permanent building on campus was erected on what is now Fort Sumter during Jackson's 12th year as President of the United States (1829-30). After leaving office, he returned to live at Mount Pleasant Park where he died on April 14, 1830 after a long and successful career as an officer in the Union army
West Point, Mississippi was founded in 1824 as a military installation by United States President James K. Polk. The current site of the military academy was donated to the United States in 1881 by General John C. Frémont, and West Point became an American Military Academy No. 1 in 1892. The academy's first class graduated in 1834.
