On February 13th 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his troops across Georgia’s (now Alabama) border into North Carolina to attack Fort Fisher which guarded entrance into Wilmington port on Cape Fear River estuary). This strategic location put Fort Fisher between Union forces loyal to Lincoln and those aligned with Johnson who wanted it captured so that he could investigate possible collusion between northern Rebel officials and Reconstructionists hostile to slavery within state boundaries On April 12th 1865 Union general Ulysses S irritation mounted when he received notification that Confederates were moving artillery eastward across I-95 towards WilmingtonPORTUGAL]}—By early May all hope seemed lost until word arrived via telegraph that Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest had reached Raleigh North Carolina with 10 000 cavalrymen reinforcements! A combined force under Sherman advanced against Fort Fisher but were repulsed at what would come known as “the Battle at Sea Point” on May 15th 1865 after day long clashes including 2 days outfitting ship Enterprise for such an event . . . At nightfall Admiral David Dixon Porter's navy bombarded fortifications which surrendered without resistance leaving behind some 2 thousand homeless refugees—one estimate puts this number much higher
