The first time I encountered Vicksburg was in 2001 when I was working as an intern at The Mississippi Valley Historical Society in Jackson. As I walked through downtown, I could see the ruins of what used to be a busy commercial district. Many of the businesses had been burned down or looted during the riots that took place following Hurricane Katrina. Despite its history, Vicksburg has never really recovered from the damage done by Hurricane Katrina. In fact, many of its streets remain unpaved and nearly every building is either dilapidated or missing its windows and glass panes. It's easy to forget that this city once thrived until it didn't - until something came along to take it away. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson decided to move his army upriver from Mobile County towards what is now Memphis because he felt that Memphis was becoming too powerful for Alabama alone to control. After months of buildup and battle with General Shelby Steele's forces, Jackson reached Memphis on July 4th 1814 and quickly resumed his march southward towards Baton Rouge. This event would later become known as The Battle Of Hernando De Soto's Bridge which led directly into history because it marked the beginning of organized slavery in Louisiana Territory (now Mississippi). During my internship at The Mississippi Valley Historical Society, we acquired some interesting artifacts related to Vicksburg - one of which was an old Confederate cannonball discovered inside a abandoned warehouse near downtown. This particular cannonball represented a significant victory for Confederate forces since they had managed to retire Union guns while stillarrisoning key military installations within reach of Fort Pillow in Arkansas! After studying more about Vicksburg and its past, I became convinced that it deserves some form of preservation attention – something that has yet to happen despite repeated calls by both local organizations and national entities such as UNESCO . Vicksburg’s importance cannot be understated – not only did it play an important role in slave trade operations throughout much of North America but also during World War II due to its strategic location between Chicago and St Louis en routeto Europe (thus providing vital resources unavailable elsewhere). Unfortunately however, these days most visitors simply walk around aimlessly looking for signs OF LIFE while ignoring THE REAL STORY OF THIS CITY THAT LOST ITS WAY UPRIVER IN A HURRICANE!
